Alternately, the camouflage demarcation line can be painted in place with a brush giving the pattern the necessary hard edge; the rest of the colour can be added with an airbrush, taking care to minimize any over-spray. When AFVs have been painted, the exhaust pipes and mufflers initially end up the same colour as the rest of the vehicle. Soon after they enter service, the heat takes its toll on the paint, which turns dark, breaks off and starts to show the effects of oxidization, including rust.
The application of a primer coat is an initial step in the process to give a base to the subsequent colours. The surface of the model can then be studied for imperfections and necessary touch-ups that were undetected during construction. Glue marks can be removed, and cracks can be repaired and the primer reapplied. The primer paint also serves to homogenize the surface of the model, which may consist of many types of components, such as various colours of styrene, brass, white metal and resin.
The silver Prismacolour pencil was then applied to the high points on the track face. Researching the colour schemes of AFVs also allows the modeller to decide upon the markings that will be added to the vehicle. Tactical numbers, unit and divisional insignia, and personal markings are a few examples of the things to add. The choice to add markings before, after, or during the weathering stages can be made on a project-by-project basis, since various techniques can either harm the markings or accentuate the appearance of things like decal film.
