In this paper a so called Regulated 2-Stage” (R2S™) turbocharging system is discussed. The R2S™ consist of two turbochargers in series which allows a sufficient support of boost pressure over the entire engine speed range. The challenge is to achieve and control an optimal transient behaviour. Based on a physical model of the R2S™ system the influence of different controlling elements is demonstrated. The first part of this paper gives a brief overview of the R2S system and the model approach. In the second part the impact of manifold volumes, inertias of the rotating parts and optimised Turbine Bypass Valve (TBV) designs are discussed.
