3, XR718 ‘BK1’, 11 Squadron, seen at Yeovilton in August 1984. Having received its ‘air superiority grey’ camouflage scheme at St Athan in April 1984, XR718 was allocated to 11 Squadron a month later and coded ‘BK1’ in June when it was selected to become the Strike Command Lightning solo aerobatics display aircraft for the 1984 air show season. 3, XP749 ‘BK2’, as seen at Binbrook in July 1984 by which time it had become Strike Command’s reserve solo Lightning display aircraft for the 1984 season.
Fred Martin A feature of 60 MU was that individual Lightnings were allocated to the unit to act as hacks and to ensure resident test pilots were able to obtain the necessary flying practice to stay current on type. 1, XM144, the first to be allocated for the purpose was delivered to 60 MU on 28 January 1967. During April it acquired pale blue bars, outlined on their upper and lower edges in dark blue, on either side of the nose roundel upon which a horizontal yellow/red ‘golden arrow’ pointed towards the nose as may be seen in this slightly hazy image.
